Vladimir Putin’s party United Russia has unveiled a new flag designed to combat the so-called “gay fever” taking over the world, just days after the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of marriage equality and millions of Facebook users placed rainbow filters on their Facebook profiles in solidarity.
The flag was officially released on Russia’s national Day of Family, Love and Fidelity this week. It features a mother, father and three children with the Russian-language hashtag, “A Real Family.”
The launch of the flag saw groups of all ages waving the new “heterosexual” mascot during the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity celebrations at Moscow’s Sokolniki park. The annual celebration is relatively new for Russia, having only been introduced in 2008. In honour of the day, divorces have been banned for the day in several Russian regions.
“This is our response to same-sex marriage, to this mockery of the concept of the family,” says Andrei Lisovenko, deputy head of the United Russia branch in Moscow.
“We have to warn against gay fever at home and support traditional values in our country.”
While homosexuality is not illegal in Russia, legislation was passed in June 2013 that has become known as Russia’s infamous “gay propaganda” law, banning the promotion of “non-traditional” sexual relations to minors.
Weeks before the unveiling of the new flag, United Russia officials were campaigning to ban the rainbow flag in spite of complaints from Russian LGBTI rights groups.
LGBTI equality group Stonewall has spoken out against the flag saying, “A #realfamily is not determined by sexual orientation or gender identity, but love.
“That sentiment is certainly missing from this flag as is, in our opinion, a splash more colour,” says a Stonewall spokesperson. “It’s also another example of how much work we still have left to do to combat homophobic, bi-phobic and transphobic attitudes and behaviours.”
The unveiling of the flag has also been met by criticism by other opponents of marriage equality, the French anti-same-sex marriage movement La Manif Pour Tous. The group is accusing United Russia of using their logo without permission as the new flag has some striking similarities to their own.
Its leader Ludovine de La Rochere has said her movement would never have allowed United Russia to use the flag, even if it had asked for permission, as their charter specifies that the movement must remain non-partisan. A partnership with a political party such as United Russia would violate those terms.
She denounced the descriptions associated with the image, saying she and her allies condemn all forms of homophobia. “For us, it is the flag of children’s rights,” she added.
The “Straight Pride” flag’s bigoted attempt to promote LGBTI relationships and families as unnatural is a strong reminder that even though progress in equality is being made across the globe, the fight for LGBTI rights in some countries has a long way to go.
